Helen Teede (b. 1988, Harare) is a painter living and working in her home-country of Zimbabwe. Using the natural landscape as a point of departure, her work traces the history of mythology, folklore and magic, exploring how our oldest stories about the world continue to influence the way we treat it and each other. She draws on a wide range of references from psychoanalysis, archeology, mythology and tradition, storytelling, bio-politics and the history of sexuality. Her paintings manifest a relationship between the body and the earth, expressing the abject, chaotic, tangled mess of history, as one story piles on top of another, weaving us into its fabric as it runs on.
